Note | Walter Kenyon fought in World War I. as a soldier with the Liver pool Regiment in the signal corps. He worked as a Tram Car conductor in 1920, living at 39 Crofton Street, O ldham, where his first son John Secombe was born. Shortly after this, in the early 1920's, he emigrated to Western Austra lia under the assisted passage scheme, leaving Emily and John in England. He worked on the construction of the railway from Pert h to Manjimup, until there were sufficient funds to enter into an agree ment with a mortgage to buy a farm under the Group Settlement Scheme. T he family then followed to the farm about six miles west of Manjimup an d started to run the 100 acre mainly dairy farm, selling the milk for b utter manufacture to the co-operative in Manjimup. The farm was part of G roup One (Location 7697) and also nominated to be the local Post Office , known as Mitcheldean Post Office. In 1929 Dennis was born in the maternity hospital at Jardee, som e miles south of Manjimup. As a consequence of the depression 1929 - 1933, the family had to sell t he farm and return to Britain. They booked passage on the Aberdeen and C ommonwealth Line ship 'Moreton Bay', sailing from Fremantle on 9th Apri l 1932 to Southampton and then by train to Lancashire. Where the family then lived is not clear, probably in Middleton with a r elative. Certainly they lived at 5 Joseph Street, Middleton, Lancashire , on 22nd August 1932. They then moved to a house on Chapel Street, Rho des, near Middleton, about 1935 and then about 1937 bought the house at 1 53 Walker Street, Rhodes, where they continued to live until after W alter retired about 1961. During the period 1835 to 1939 he worked a s a carpenter and joiner building houses for William? Redferne. During t he second world war he was employed by the Air Ministry in the Maintena nce Units near Heywood. Post war he returned to the building trade working on the new estate kn own as Alkrington, Middleton. In 1963 they bought the house at 4 Prospe ct Place, Eastling, Kent, where they lived until their deaths. |
